2020 marks the 30th anniversary of the legendary Air Max 90, so Nike is bringing back its OG “Volt” colorway as part of the celebrations. Designed by Tinker Hatfield, the Air Max 90 is widely-regarded as one of the most influential Air Max models in Nike history, on par with silhouettes like the Air Max 1, Air Max 95 and Air Max 97. The initial release in 1990 marked a turning point in Air Max lexicon due to the bold ’90s details and enhanced cushioning unit. Now, it’s set to take a victory lap with this true-to-the-original reconstruction.
The “Volt” is constructed from a layered mix of white mesh, grey nubuck and black leather. Its accents are what provide the moniker, with pops of vibrant neon yellow appearing on the eyestays, tongue patch, heel badge and mudguard branding. A slightly more rounded Swoosh and nylon liner provide classical details that are sure to delight Nike Sportswearhistory buffs. There’s more of the vivid “Volt” hue down on the white midsole as well, where it surrounds the heel’s visible Air Max unit.
