Madvillainy stands as the sole studio album by the American hip hop duo Madvillain, comprised of British-American rapper MF Doom and American record producer Madlib. Released on March 23, 2004, through Stones Throw Records, the album was crafted between 2002 and 2004.
During a trip to Brazil, Madlib meticulously developed most of the instrumentals within the confines of his hotel room, utilizing minimal equipment: a Boss SP-303 sampler, a turntable, and a tape deck. However, a rough demo of the album surfaced on the internet about fourteen months prior to its official release, leading to frustration for the duo. This incident prompted them to momentarily shelve the project until after they had each released other individual works.
While Madvillainy didn't achieve substantial commercial success, it emerged as one of Stones Throw's best-selling albums. It reached number 179 on the US Billboard 200 and captured the attention of non-traditional hip hop media outlets like The New Yorker. Madvillainy garnered extensive critical praise, commending Madlib's inventive production and MF Doom's lyrical prowess. Many consider it as a pinnacle in Doom's discography.
The album has earned placements in numerous esteemed lists of all-time greatest albums, securing positions such as 411 on NME's The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, 365 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, and 18 on Rolling Stone's 200 Greatest Hip-Hop Albums of All Time.
