NAS - It Was Written (LP)
It Was Written" serves as the second studio album by American rapper Nas, released on July 2, 1996, through Columbia Records. Following the moderate commercial success of his debut album, "Illmatic" (1994), Nas opted for a more refined, mainstream approach for "It Was Written." This album, largely produced by Trackmasters, departed from the raw, underground style of his debut and leaned into themes associated with mafioso and gangsta rap. Additionally, it introduced Nas's brief supergroup, The Firm, which included rappers Foxy Brown, AZ, and Cormega.
Enjoying commercial success, the album sold 270,000 copies in its first week, securing the top spot on the US Billboard 200 chart. It received predominantly positive reviews, marking Nas's rise in mainstream popularity and contributing to the emergence of mafioso rap. It aligned with other successful albums such as Raekwon's "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…" (1995) and Jay-Z's "Reasonable Doubt" (1996). However, Nas's shift towards a more commercial sound led to accusations of "selling out" within the hip hop community. Critically, it faced challenges due to comparisons with the revered "Illmatic." Despite this, "It Was Written" attained triple platinum certification with at least 3 million copies sold, standing as Nas's highest-selling album to date.
